- Sprinkle yeast into warm water and let stand until dissolved and bubbles form.
- In large mixing bowl or electric mixer bowl, beat eggs until light.
- Gradually, beat in sugar, salt, vanilla, sour cream and butter.
- Add 2 cups flour and beat 5 minutes.
- Beat in remaining flour until dough ball forms. Add more flour if necessary.
- Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes and dough is elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl and butter top lightly. Cover bowl with clean towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- In bowl, punch dough down, then place on floured surface.
- Use a rolling pin to roll dough into a 10"x 15" rectangle.
- With knife or pizza cutter, score the rectangle into thirds lengthwise, then cut diagonal strips on both sides.
- Lay apple slices sprinkled with sugar mixture down the middle.
- Begin braiding the bread by overlapping sides onto each other down the middle. Pinch ends to form a seal.
- Brush top of bread with butter (you can use beaten egg whites or milk).
- Sprinkle top with more cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Bake bread at 350˚ for 30 minutes. When baked, cool for 10 minutes, then remove bread and place on cookie rack to finish cooling (don't want a soggy bottom).
